So I'm doing the environmental thing here at NYU, and loving every minute of it. Earth Matters, the Green House, the Sustainability Task Force, the Environmental Studies Department, all of these groups have amaaaazing people that I love being around and hanging out with. I think it's super important for us to build a community around environmental change here at NYU.

I've been thinking a lot lately about eco-villages and intentional communities. The more I study and learn about alternative living, the more convinced I become that this is the answer to so many of our environmental and social problems. I realize that the very term 'eco-village' has ideas attached to it that will turn people away, so I'm trying to figure out how to make this idea more accessible to everyone. When it comes down to it, an eco-village is just a small community of people who try to live as sustainably as possible (think solar-power and local agriculture), care about each other (think communal dinners and consensus decision making), and recognize that they're a part of something larger than themselves. Once we start caring about people again- once we realize that we don't live in a vaccuum and that we need to depend on others for our happiness and well-being- we can begin to live in a way that isn't harmful and that truly makes us happy.
